Frequently Asked Questions

Over the years our patients have asked us a great many questions about their ultrasound scans.

We’ve collected some of the most common questions and tried to answer them in a simple and straightforward manner.

Do I need a referral?
Yes. A doctor’s referral or request form is required for each ultrasound or procedure at Specialist Imaging for Women. The referral/request form must have your doctor’s name, signature and provider number on it as well as details about the specific test that you require.

Are the tests Bulk Billed or covered by private health insurance?
We are a private clinic, where you are looked after by doctors and sonographers who have specialist training in womens and paediatric ultrasound. To provide this high level of service we are unable to Bulk Bill your ultrasound.

All ultrasound services are Medicare rebatable, we are happy to process this for you at the time of your appointment. Medicare rebates processed online into a registered bank account are usually in your bank account within 48 hours.

Unfortunately private health insurance does not cover the cost of ultrasound scans.

Is there a long wait for a booking?
We don’t have a waiting list to make an appointment. We can generally fit you in within a week.

How do I prepare for my ultrasound?
Our friendly reception staff will advise you on any preparation required when you make an appointment. Some tests require preparation such as a full bladder, fasting or bowel preparation, while other tests don’t require any preparation at all.

When will my doctor gets the results?
All ultrasounds are reported on the day of service and results are posted the same day. Australia Post take 2-6 business days to deliver mail so if you are seeing your doctor quite soon please advise our reception staff and they will fax the report to your doctor.
Some doctors are connected to our electronic reporting system and will be able to see the report as soon as it is finalised.

Where should I park my car?
There is a 4 hour carpark behind our building called Bryant Reserve. You can access this carpark via Ivanhoe Parade (behind upper Heidelberg Road).

Can I request that a women scans me?
Yes! Specialist Imaging for Women is an all-female team. All of our friendly Doctors, Sonographers, Nursing and Reception staff are women.

Will I get pictures of my baby?
Each of our ultrasound rooms is equipped with a large wall-mounted TV screen so you can see your ultrasound in real-time.

Specialist Imaging for Women offers a complimentary digital download of a select number of your ultrasound pictures for your 12 and 20 week pregnancy ultrasounds. The images are encrypted and sent directly to your mobile phone.

We highly recommended that you download and store your pictures on your computer or other device as they will be removed from the server at the end of 90 days.

For more information please ask our friendly staff.

Who can I bring to my pregnancy ultrasound?
This is an exciting and special time for expecting parents to see their baby. You are welcome to bring your partner or other support person with you to your ultrasound.
Please be aware that small children are rarely able to concentrate for the duration of the scan and may diminish your ultrasound experience if they require your attention.
It is important to remember that this is a medical appointment and unsettled children or too many family members may disrupt the concentration of the specialist performing your scan.
